The rapid development of tourism has created a new industry on Easter Island. Many islanders have started to convert their spare bedrooms into guest houses and are trying to save enough money to import a jeep to rent to the tourists.
The farmers are more concerned about servicing visitors and have even stopped growing any food to feed themselves! Virtually all produce is now shipped thousands of miles from the mainland of Chile.
There are no large harbors and cargo ships must ferry the provisions ashore. Only a few small fishing boats remain seaworthy enough to supply the island with fresh fish.
